SMC D-M9B Auto Switch is a 2-wire magnetic sensor that uses magnetic induction principles to detect the position of a magnet attached to a cylinder piston. When the piston moves to the sensor installation position, the magnetic field closes the internal circuit, sending a signal to the controller (PLC).
SMC D-M9B Specifications

Key Highlights of the D-M9B Series
- Ultra-compact size: With a direct mount groove design, the D-M9B sensor fits neatly into cylinder body slots without interfering with surrounding mechanical components.
- High durability (Solid state): Unlike mechanical reed switches that wear out or stick over time, the D-M9B uses semiconductor components, offering near-infinite lifespan and strong vibration resistance.
- Extreme sensitivity: Fast response capability ensures automation systems run at high speeds without missing signals.
- Flexible cabling: Made from flexible material capable of continuous bending in robotic arms or mobile machine assemblies.
Industrial Applications
The D-M9B sensor is an essential component in modern production lines:
- Cylinder stroke detection: Reports start and end points of the piston for the PLC to execute subsequent process steps.
- Packaging & labeling systems: Controls item pushing arms and product clamping.
- Electronic component assembly: Used in micro-grippers requiring high precision.
- Food & pharmaceutical industry: Thanks to IP67 standards, it operates well in high-humidity environments or frequent washdown areas.
Usage Notes
To prevent sensor burnout or signal distortion, note the following:
- Correct polarity: As a 2-wire DC type, connect the Brown wire to positive (+) and Blue wire to negative (-) of the load. Reverse connection may not instantly damage the sensor but will prevent operation.
- Use with load: Never connect the two sensor wires directly to a power source without a load (such as a relay coil or PLC input). This causes a short circuit and instantly burns out the sensor.
- Avoid magnetic interference: Do not install near high-voltage electric motors or transformers to prevent false signals.
- Cable bending radius: Avoid tight bending near the sensor base (minimum bending radius typically R12mm) to prevent internal copper wire breakage.
- Installation position: Adjust the sensor so the LED lights stably at the desired stop position. Avoid edge placement of the magnetic field zone where minor vibrations cause chattering.
